Why does the Internet love Cat(fight)s?

Miley, Miley, Miley! She’s on everyone’s minds so much she’s almost becoming irrelevant, like when you say a word so much it completely loses its meaning. She literally can’t stop. And everyone’s got an opinion on it! With the government shutdown we’ve got time to kill anyway.

So what’s your opinion on it? Is she the new face of sexual liberation and female empowerment? Is she an attention-craving twenty-year-old absorbed in the rush of the entertainment industry? Sinead O’Connor (for those unfamiliar with this name, she’s the chick with the shaved head who tore up a picture of the pope on SNL) seems to be leaning towards the latter, as she has expressed in the four “open letters” she’s recently written to Miles.

Sinead O’Connor’s first letter was written in response to Miley sharing with Rolling Stone that the “Wrecking Ball” music video was inspired by and modeled after “Nothing Compares 2U,” Sinead’s 90s hit. Miley’s homage was not appreciated, as Sinead expressed in her first letter. She compares Miley’s recent actions to prostitution for the music industry, telling Miles that “men are making more money than you are from you getting naked”. She implores Miley to consider the effect the publicizing of her sexuality is having on her peers, most importantly other women.

Sinead’s first letter is honest, straightforward, and open, and brings to light the confusing nature of what it means to be a role model for women in today’s day and age. However, her wisdom was promptly swept under the rug by this “public conversation” turned "catfight." Miley responded to Sinead’s first letter by tweeting mockingly about the artist’s mental health, comparing her to Amanda Bynes (where is Amanda lately, anyway?), to which Sinead wrote another letter, to which Miley tweeted back, to which Sinead wrote another letter, to which Miley again tweeted a response, and really no resolution has been reached and basically the only positive outcome of this all is Robin Skouteris’s fricken beautiful mashup, "Nothing Compares to Wrecking Ball.”

It’s too bad no actual conclusion was made between the two on how to move forward as empowered women. Sadly, all it is now is an online catfight between two angry bitches.
